Aquarium Heaters
A heater is quite literally a matter of survival for most aquarium fish – tropical species, which form the basis of most aquarium set-ups, come from environments with a water temperature of 24–28°C, and any significant drop in temperature causes stress, weakens the immune system and increases susceptibility to disease. A sudden temperature shock caused by a heater failure or power cut can cause mass fish deaths within a matter of hours. A quality heater with a precise thermostat is therefore one of the most important investments any aquarist can make.

Modern aquarium heaters are significantly more reliable and accurate than their predecessors – digital thermostats accurate to 0.5°C and automatic overheat protection are now standard even in the mid-price range. Even so, the golden rule of experienced aquarists still holds: never rely on a single heater – a combination of two weaker heaters is more reliable than one powerful one, and if one fails, the other will still provide a minimum level of heating.
Types of aquarium heater
- Rod-style glass heaters – the most common type of aquarium heater. A glass or quartz tube containing a resistance wire and a built-in thermostat. Available in various wattages for different aquarium volumes, and in most cases allowing temperature adjustment via a dial or digital display. They're positioned vertically or horizontally in an area with good water flow, for even heat distribution.
- Heaters with an external thermostat – a separate thermostat and heating element allow for more precise temperature control and easier operation without having to reach into the aquarium. Suitable for demanding set-ups that require precise temperature stability – discus, marine aquariums or breeding tanks.
- Inline heaters – heaters fitted directly into the external filter hose. They heat the water outside the aquarium and take up no space inside the tank. They're visually unobtrusive and ensure even heat distribution, as the water is heated while flowing through the filter. Particularly suitable for aquariums where aesthetics and a natural-looking environment are a priority.
- Under-tank heaters – thin heating mats placed beneath the aquarium that warm the water from below. They simulate natural geothermal warming of the substrate and encourage water circulation in the substrate that benefits plant roots. Suitable as a supplement to the main heater, especially in demanding planted aquariums.
- Titanium heaters – heaters with a titanium body resistant to corrosion and mechanical damage. Essential in marine aquariums, where glass or stainless-steel heaters would quickly corrode in salt water. They're significantly more durable than glass versions.
- Nano heaters – compact heaters specially designed for small aquariums and nano tanks up to approximately 30 litres. Available in low wattages of 25–50W, their small size means they don't take up valuable space in a small tank.
How to size a heater correctly
The right heater wattage depends on the volume of the aquarium and the difference between room temperature and the desired water temperature:
- Rule of thumb – roughly 1W per litre of water for an aquarium in a room at a normal temperature of 20–22°C, with a target water temperature of 24–26°C.
- Cooler rooms – for aquariums in cooler spaces, or for species requiring a higher temperature, choose a more powerful heater – roughly 1.5–2W per litre.
- Large aquariums – for aquariums over 200 litres, it's a good idea to use two heaters placed on opposite sides of the tank for even heat distribution. Set each heater to the desired temperature.
- Power reserve – always choose a heater with a slight power reserve. A heater constantly running at full power wears out faster and has no reserve capacity if something goes wrong.
Correct positioning of the heater
Where you position the heater in the aquarium has a direct impact on how evenly the water is heated and on the heater's efficiency:
- Always position the heater in an area with good water flow – near the filter outlet or air stone. Stagnant water around the heater causes uneven heating and puts unnecessary strain on the thermostat.
- Position the heater horizontally or at an angle – a horizontal position ensures more even heat distribution than a vertical one, where warm water simply rises straight up.
- Never place the heater directly in the substrate – blocking water flow around the heater causes overheating and can damage the thermostat or the glass.
- Never remove a glass heater from the water while it's running – moving from hot water into cool air causes thermal shock and can crack the glass. Always unplug the heater first and wait 10–15 minutes before taking it out.
Heater maintenance and checks
Regularly checking the heater and water temperature is a basic routine for every responsible aquarist:
- Daily temperature check – check the aquarium temperature every day using an accurate thermometer. A deviation of more than 1–2°C from the set temperature signals a problem with the heater or thermostat.
- Thermostat calibration – a heater's thermostat can gradually drift from its set value. Regularly compare the set temperature with a reading from an accurate digital thermometer, and adjust if there's a discrepancy.
- Visual inspection – regularly check the heater for cracked glass, limescale build-up or a damaged cable. Replace a cracked heater immediately – there's a risk of electric shock.
- Replacing the heater – we recommend replacing even a reliably working heater after 2–3 years of use. The thermostat wears out gradually, and the risk of failure increases the longer it's been in use.
Practical tips for aquarium heaters:
- Always keep a spare heater at home – a heater failure in winter can cause mass die-offs of tropical fish within hours. A spare heater is the cheapest insurance any aquarist can have.
- Always calibrate a new heater in a bucket of water with an accurate thermometer before putting it in the aquarium – the thermostats on cheaper heaters can be significantly inaccurate.
- If there's a power cut, wrap the aquarium in a blanket or polystyrene – thermal insulation will slow down the water cooling and buy you more time to sort out back-up heating.
- For the most accurate temperature monitoring, use an external digital thermometer with an alarm – it will alert you with a sound or a phone notification if the set limits are exceeded.
- Never switch the heater on outside of water, even briefly – the heating element overheating out of water causes immediate damage or destroys the heater completely.
A reliable heater with a precise thermostat, together with regular temperature checks, form the basis of a healthy and stable environment for your fish. Don't cut corners on heater quality – it's one of the most important components of any aquarium, and its failure can have immediate and irreversible consequences.
