Aquarium Aeration
Aeration is one of the essentials of any aquarium – yet its importance is often underestimated. An air pump with a diffuser doesn't just supply oxygen to the water – it performs a whole range of other functions that directly affect fish health, the efficiency of the biological filter and the overall stability of the aquarium. A lack of oxygen in the water is just as dangerous for fish as a lack of oxygen is for people – and unlike many other problems, it shows up very quickly and without warning.

Oxygen enters the water mainly at the interface between water and air – through surface movement, water flow and plant photosynthesis. In nature, oxygen exchange is driven by flowing rivers, wind on lake surfaces or water movement on a coral reef. In a closed aquarium, this role is taken over by the filter, aeration and water movement – without them, oxygen is quickly depleted, especially in densely stocked or overheated tanks.
What aeration does in an aquarium
- Oxygenating the water – air bubbles rising to the surface create water movement and gas exchange at the surface. The bubbles themselves actually transfer relatively little oxygen directly into the water – what matters is the water circulation caused by the rising bubbles, which brings deeper water up to the surface where gas exchange takes place.
- Circulation and preventing stratification – without water movement, an aquarium develops thermal and chemical stratification – layers of water with different parameters. Warm water rises, cold water sinks to the bottom, and markedly different conditions form in different zones of the tank. Aeration keeps the water evenly mixed and parameters stable throughout the whole volume of the aquarium.
- Supporting biological filtration – the beneficial bacteria in a biological filter are aerobic organisms that need oxygen to function. Well-oxygenated water directly supports the efficiency of biological filtration and the breakdown of toxic ammonia.
- Backup oxygenation if the filter fails – during filter cleaning or a breakdown, aeration provides a minimum level of oxygenation and prevents a rapid drop in oxygen that would endanger the fish.
- Visual appeal – fine bubbles rising from an air stone or decorative diffuser add a lively, moving element to the aquarium. Bubble curtains or bubble walls are a popular decorative feature in modern aquariums.
Types of aquarium aeration
- Air pumps – electric pumps that compress air and feed it through tubing to a diffuser in the tank. They're available in various outputs for different tank volumes and numbers of outlets. Good-quality air pumps are quiet, reliable and have adjustable output. Noise level is one of the key selection criteria – cheap pumps can be quite intrusive, especially in a bedroom or living room.
- Air stones and diffusers – porous stones or diffusers fitted to the end of the air tubing that break the air stream into fine bubbles. The finer the bubbles a diffuser produces, the greater the contact area between air and water, and the more efficient the gas exchange. Air stones gradually clog up and need regular replacement or cleaning.
- Bubble curtains and bubble walls – special diffusers in the form of long bars or coiled tubes that produce an even curtain of fine bubbles along the whole length of the tank. They're a popular decorative feature and also provide even aeration across the whole volume of the tank.
- Venturi aeration – a system that uses the water flow from the filter to draw in air without needing a separate air pump. It's quieter than a conventional pump and needs no separate power source. Its output depends on the filter's flow rate and is less adjustable than conventional aeration.
- Battery-powered backup air pump – a pump powered by batteries or a rechargeable battery that provides basic oxygenation during a power cut. It's an essential safeguard for densely stocked tanks or demanding species. Modern backup pumps switch on automatically when the power goes out.
How to size aeration correctly
The right level of aeration depends on the tank's volume, how densely it's stocked with fish, and whether it contains plants:
- Basic rule – choose the air pump's output according to the manufacturer's recommendation for the tank volume. Aeration that's too strong causes excessive water movement and stress in species that prefer calm water – for example bettas, discus or angelfish.
- Densely stocked aquariums – need stronger aeration than lightly stocked tanks. Every fish consumes oxygen and produces CO2 – the more fish, the higher the oxygen demand.
- Planted aquariums – live plants produce oxygen under light, so aeration can be lighter during the day. At night, however, plants consume oxygen – in densely planted tanks, night-time aeration matters more than daytime aeration.
- Warm water – warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water. Tanks kept at higher temperatures – for example discus tanks at 28–30 °C – need stronger aeration.
Signs of oxygen deficiency in an aquarium
Oxygen deficiency is an acute situation requiring an immediate response – every minute counts:
- Fish at the surface – the most characteristic sign of oxygen deficiency. Fish gather at the surface, where oxygen concentration is highest, gasping for air. This is an acute emergency requiring an immediate increase in aeration or a partial water change.
- Lethargy and reduced activity – fish become listless, stay near the bottom, or move slowly and erratically.
- Increased breathing rate – rapid gill movements signal increased effort while breathing.
- Fish dying with no obvious cause – particularly at night or early in the morning, when oxygen concentration is at its lowest.
Practical tips for aquarium aeration:
- Always position the air pump above the water level of the tank or fit a check valve in the tubing – during a power cut, water could otherwise siphon back through the tubing onto the floor.
- Regularly check air tubing for blockages and cracks – cracked tubing reduces output and can cause air leaks.
- Replace the air stone every 3–6 months, or whenever the bubbles noticeably get coarser – a clogged stone puts extra strain on the pump and shortens its lifespan.
- In summer, when temperatures are high, increase aeration – warm water holds less oxygen, and fish are at greater risk of oxygen deficiency in summer than in winter.
- A backup battery pump should always be charged and ready to use – a power cut won't warn you in advance, and every minute without oxygenation counts in a densely stocked tank.
Reliable aeration is an unassuming but essential part of a healthy aquarium. Invest in a quiet, good-quality pump with sufficient output, and always keep a backup solution on hand in case of a power cut – your fish will thank you with a healthy, active life.
