The company initially focused on nutrition for farm animals, but in the 20th century began developing specialised food for dogs and cats. In 2001, Ralston Purina was acquired by the Swiss company Nestlé, which merged its existing portfolio (including the Friskies brand) under the new Nestlé Purina PetCare brand.
Today, Purina is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, and operates in more than 70 countries worldwide. The company invests in research and development, runs several research centres and works with vets and animal nutrition experts to develop food that meets the modern nutritional requirements of dogs and cats.
