History and origin of the Orijen brand

Orijen was created under the family firm Champion Petfoods, founded in 1985 by Reinhard Muhlenfeld in the Canadian province of Alberta. The name Orijen comes from the word "origin" — a return to the roots, to the carnivore's natural diet. From the outset, Orijen was designed as a food with the highest possible meat content and zero grains. Today it's sold in more than 70 countries worldwide, has repeatedly won awards for best dog and cat food, and in 2021 was named the world's best dog food by Business Insider magazine. Orijen is made exclusively at Champion Petfoods' own facilities — production has never been outsourced to external plants, which guarantees full quality control from raw ingredient right through to the finished pack.

Why is Orijen food different from the rest?

Orijen is built on the WholePrey philosophy — the whole prey animal. The recipes include not just meat but also organs, cartilage and bone, exactly as a carnivore would consume them in the wild. Meat content reaches up to 85%, with more than half supplied fresh or raw by local farmers, ranchers and fishermen from Western Canada. The food contains no grains, potatoes, high-glycaemic carbohydrates or synthetic additives — the nutrients come naturally from the ingredients themselves. The low carbohydrate content matches the natural physiology of a carnivore, whose digestive system isn't adapted to processing large amounts of plant matter. The back of every pack lists direct contact details for the farmer who supplied the ingredients — a level of transparency with no comparison on the market.

Who is Orijen food suitable for?

Orijen is the choice for owners looking for the absolute maximum that dry dog or cat food can offer. We particularly recommend it in the following situations:

Orijen for dogs and cats with food allergies — grain-free recipes with no corn, wheat, gluten or potatoes significantly reduce the risk of allergic reactions. For dogs allergic to poultry, the Six Fish or Regional Red varieties are a good fit, as they contain no poultry.

Orijen for highly active and sporting dogs — a high protein and healthy fat content with minimal carbohydrates provides stable, long-lasting energy without glycaemic swings. Ideal for working dogs, sporting dogs and breeds under heavy physical demands.

Orijen for demanding breeders and owners — if you're looking for a food with a completely transparent composition, traceable origin for every ingredient and the highest possible meat content, Orijen has no rival on the market.

Orijen for dogs and cats with sensitive digestion — the high digestibility of fresh meat and the absence of grains naturally supports healthy digestion without burdening the gut with hard-to-digest ingredients.

Orijen for puppies and kittens — special recipes for young animals with a balanced ratio of calcium, phosphorus and DHA support proper development of bones, brain and immune system.

What flavours and varieties does Orijen offer?

For dogs, the available varieties are Original (chicken, turkey, egg and fish), Regional Red (beef, wild boar, bison and lamb), Six Fish (six types of fish from the Canadian Pacific), Tundra (goat, venison, duck and fish) and Puppy for puppies.
