History and origin of the Orijen brand
Orijen was created under the family firm Champion Petfoods, founded in 1985 by Reinhard Muhlenfeld in the Canadian province of Alberta. The name Orijen comes from the word "origin" — a return to the roots, to the carnivore's natural diet. From the outset, Orijen was designed as a food with the highest possible meat content and zero grains. Today it's sold in more than 70 countries worldwide, has repeatedly won awards for best dog and cat food, and in 2021 was named the world's best dog food by Business Insider magazine. Orijen is made exclusively at Champion Petfoods' own facilities — production has never been outsourced to external plants, which guarantees full quality control from raw ingredient right through to the finished pack.
Why is Orijen food different from the rest?
Orijen is built on the WholePrey philosophy — the whole prey animal. The recipes include not just meat but also organs, cartilage and bone, exactly as a carnivore would consume them in the wild. Meat content reaches up to 85%, with more than half supplied fresh or raw by local farmers, ranchers and fishermen from Western Canada. The food contains no grains, potatoes, high-glycaemic carbohydrates or synthetic additives — the nutrients come naturally from the ingredients themselves.
