Hay for Rodents
Hay is a roughage feed, and some rodents simply can't do without it, since it's a staple part of their diet. It's best given in a hay rack rather than loose, so it doesn't end up mixed in with the bedding. Some animals will otherwise turn it into a nest and spoil it with droppings.

It's important to buy good-quality, sweet-smelling hay and not confuse it with straw. Some hays are enriched with various herbs, offering something extra. Certain rodents simply can't do without regular hay, since it's a staple part of their diet. It's best given in a hay rack rather than loose, so it doesn't end up mixed in with the bedding. Some animals will otherwise turn it into a nest and spoil it with droppings. Feeding hay that's been spoiled this way can lead to digestive problems, so it's better to offer a different nesting material, such as wood wool, instead. Be sure never to skip hay for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, gerbils and chipmunks.
