Lighting is one of the most underrated elements of aquarium equipment – yet it has a huge impact on plant health, fish wellbeing, the natural behaviour of an aquarium's inhabitants and the overall visual impression. Good lighting isn't just about being able to see into the tank – it's a complex ecological factor affecting plant photosynthesis, fish circadian rhythms, algae growth and the chemical processes within the aquarium. Unsuitable lighting is one of the most common causes of uncontrolled algae growth or ailing aquarium plants.

Modern fishkeeping has undergone a revolution when it comes to lighting – traditional fluorescent tubes and halogen lamps have largely been replaced by LED technology, which brings significant energy savings, a longer lifespan, more precise spectrum control and the ability to simulate a natural day cycle, including sunrise, sunset and cloud effects. Well-chosen LED lighting is an investment that pays off for years.
The role of lighting in an aquarium
Lighting performs several essential functions in an aquarium, none of which can be considered in isolation:
- Plant photosynthesis – live plants need light for photosynthesis, during which they produce oxygen and consume CO2 and nitrates. Insufficient lighting causes plants to wilt, leaves to fade and gradually decay. Conversely, overly strong lighting without enough CO2 and nutrients encourages uncontrolled algae growth.
- Fish circadian rhythm – like humans, fish need a regular cycle of light and dark to maintain their natural biological rhythm. Irregular lighting or too long a photoperiod causes stress, weakens immunity and disrupts reproductive cycles. The ideal lighting duration is 8–10 hours a day – always at the same time.
- Visual presentation – proper lighting brings out fish colours, creates a sense of depth and gives the aquarium aesthetic appeal. The right light spectrum can turn an average aquarium into a genuine visual centrepiece.
- Algae control – unsuitable lighting is one of the main triggers of problem algae growth. Too long a photoperiod, the wrong spectrum or uneven lighting all create ideal conditions for algae when plants aren't making full use of the available light.
Types of aquarium lighting
- LED lighting – today's standard for aquarium lighting. It's characterised by low energy consumption, a long lifespan of 30,000–50,000 hours, minimal heat output and the ability to fine-tune spectrum and intensity. Quality aquarium LED units allow you to simulate a natural day cycle – gradual sunrise, cloud simulation or a storm effect. Powerful full-spectrum LED panels that support photosynthesis are available for planted aquariums.
- T5 fluorescent tubes – still a popular choice, especially for demanding planted aquariums. They provide even lighting along the full length of the tank and come in various spectrums – from daylight through plant-growth spectrums to actinic blue light for marine aquariums. They need replacing roughly every 12 months even though they still light up – their output and spectrum gradually deteriorate.
- T8 fluorescent tubes – an older, less powerful version of the T5 tube. Still available as replacement lighting for older fittings, but for new aquariums it's better to invest in LED or T5 technology.
- HQI and HQL halogen lamps – very powerful spot light sources used for deep tanks and demanding marine coral aquariums. They create a natural shimmering effect on the substrate. Their downside is high energy consumption and heat output that requires water cooling.
- Actinic lighting – blue and violet spectrum lighting used mainly in marine aquariums to support photosynthesis in coral zooxanthellae and to bring out the fluorescent colours of marine organisms. It's combined with white lighting for optimal conditions.
How to choose the right lighting for your type of aquarium
The choice of lighting depends on the type of aquarium, how demanding the plants or corals are, and the depth of the tank:
- Aquariums without live plants – lighting of 0.3–0.5 W per litre is enough. The focus here is on the right spectrum for natural fish colouration – daylight-white light with a colour temperature of 6,500–10,000 K.
- Planted aquariums with undemanding species – lighting of 0.5–0.8 W per litre with a full spectrum that supports photosynthesis. Most mid-range modern LED fittings meet this requirement.
- Demanding planted aquariums (high-tech) – output of 0.8–1.5 W per litre or more with a good-quality full spectrum. These aquariums also require CO2 fertilisation and regular nutrient supplementation – without enough CO2, strong lighting will simply trigger explosive algae growth.
- Marine fish-only aquariums – a combination of white and actinic blue lighting at 0.5–1 W per litre.
- Marine reef aquariums (with corals) – the most demanding category, requiring powerful lighting with a precise spectrum for zooxanthellae photosynthesis. Output of 1–3 W per litre, depending on the coral species and tank depth.
Common mistakes with aquarium lighting
- Too long a photoperiod – lighting for more than 10–12 hours a day encourages algae growth. Use a timer for automatic, consistent switching on and off.
- Direct sunlight – never place your aquarium in direct sunlight. Sunlight causes uncontrolled algae growth and can dangerously overheat the water.
- Tubes that are never replaced – T5 and T8 tubes lose output and shift spectrum after 6–12 months of use, even though they still appear to light up. Regular replacement is essential for plant health.
- Uneven lighting – dark corners of the aquarium are the perfect spot for algae growth and struggling plants. Choosing the right length and placement of fittings ensures even lighting across the whole tank.
Practical tips for aquarium lighting:
- Always use a lighting timer – a regular, automatic cycle of light and dark is key to preventing algae and keeping fish comfortable. Switching lights on and off by hand is unreliable.
- If you have an algae problem, cut the photoperiod to 6–8 hours and gradually extend it back to the optimal 8–10 hours once the problem is under control.
- Fish silhouettes look best against the background of the tank under lighting with a colour temperature of 6,500–8,000 K – light that's too warm or too cool distorts their natural colouring.
- For planted aquariums, consider lighting with dimming and spectrum adjustment – being able to adjust light intensity to suit plant growth and keep algae in check is a valuable feature.
- Don't cover LED fittings with the aquarium lid without adequate ventilation – overheating the LED chips significantly shortens their lifespan.
The right lighting turns an aquarium from a mere tank of water into a living underwater world full of colour, movement and life. Invest in a quality, adjustable, controllable fitting – and your aquarium will reward you with thriving plants, healthy fish and a beautiful look that never gets old.
