Dog food tailored to your dog
Kibble makes up the main part of most dogs' diet, so it pays to choose carefully and weigh up several factors. Don't be put off by the huge range on offer - there are plenty of options, including more exotic flavours such as tuna, quail or even ostrich, making it easier to find dog food that suits both your pet and you. Start by considering the most general factors.
1) Age
Puppies are still developing and need plenty of energy for growth, while older dogs tend to put on weight and need lower-fat food, such as chicken. That's why it's important to factor in your dog's age when choosing kibble. For pups up to 1 year old, choose puppy food; from 1 to 7 years, go for adult food; and if your four-legged friend is over 7, reach for senior dog food.
2) Size
There are two main reasons dog kibble is divided by size. Firstly, the shape and size of the kibble is tailored to the animal's jaw - a small Yorkshire terrier would struggle to chew the large kibble a Great Dane enjoys. Secondly, it's about composition: food for large dogs, for example, is generally formulated to support their joints without putting extra strain on them.
3) Quality and composition
Your dog might be a picky eater who can tell whether you've bought lamb, horse meat or pheasant-flavoured kibble, and we understand you'll take that into account. What matters most, though, is the overall composition of the food. Meat should naturally make up the largest share and appear first on the ingredients list, since ingredients are listed in descending order by content.
You can also choose between premium, super-premium and holistic food. Premium food is the “happy medium” in terms of quality, while super-premium naturally ranks higher (and costs more), usually containing more meat and fewer grains. Holistic kibble aims to mimic the natural diet of dogs and wolves as closely as possible. It contains plenty of meat (often fish or game), as well as vegetables, fruit and herbs.
4) Health and lifestyle
Does your dog have an allergy to gluten or other ingredients? Are they neutered? Or do they suffer from skin and coat problems? When choosing dog food, take into account their current condition, health and lifestyle. You'll find food whose composition helps prevent health issues and supports the treatment of existing ones. In this respect, food containing insect protein is becoming an increasingly popular choice, suitable for sensitive dogs and those with allergies.
5) The right type of meat
Flavours like bison, reindeer or fish aren't just there for your canine gourmet to pick and choose - each type of meat has a different composition and suits different dogs. Among the most popular types of meat in dog kibble is poultry. Chicken kibble, for instance, can be fed to most dogs of any age or condition. Turkey is popular in diet foods. Just be careful with duck meat, which is a little fattier.
Highly digestible, tasty and rich in protein and iron - that's beef, another popular option. Just bear in mind its higher cholesterol level. If your furry friend needs to gain a little weight or is under heavy physical strain, don't be afraid to reach for pork.
If you want kibble that gets as close as possible to the natural diet of canine predators, look for wild boar, rabbit or other game in the composition. It's leaner, low in fat, packed with vitamins and minerals, and suitable even for dogs with various allergies.
And we mustn't forget fish. They're a great source of vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids - just keep an eye on the fat content. Oily fish like salmon and mackerel are good for your dog's coat, while leaner fish are better if you're trying to help them lose weight.
We offer a selection not just by brand, but also by your dog's age (puppy, adult, senior), size (food for small, medium and large breeds) and specific requirements. Click on the age you're looking for, then filter the food using the options on the left of the page.
