History and origins of the Acana brand
The Acana brand was founded in 1985 in the Canadian province of Alberta by Reinhard Muhlenfeld, under the family business Champion Petfoods. The name Acana is a direct nod to its origins – a blend of the words Alberta and Canada. From day one, the company has stood by a single principle: making food the way dogs and cats would seek it out in the wild. This approach became known as Biologically Appropriate™, and it holds true unchanged to this day. Champion Petfoods has never outsourced production to external factories – every batch of Acana is made exclusively in its own NorthStar® kitchens in Alberta. This gives the company full control over every step of production, from the origin of the ingredients to the finished pack. Today, Acana is sold in more than 70 countries worldwide, and the brand has repeatedly won international awards for quality and environmental sustainability, including the title of World's Best Pet Food Brand in 2017.
What makes Acana different from other foods?
Most food on the market is built around grains, plant-based proteins and synthetic additives. Acana takes exactly the opposite approach. Every recipe is based on a high proportion of fresh meat – up to 75% – sourced exclusively from trusted local farmers, ranchers and fishermen in western Canada. More than 95% of the ingredients have a precisely declared regional origin. The meat comes from free-range animals raised without hormones or antibiotics, the eggs from free-run hens, and the fish is caught sustainably. The recipes follow a “whole prey” approach – including meat, organs and cartilage – naturally covering the full spectrum of amino acids, minerals and vitamins without the need for synthetic substitutes. Fresh ingredients are delivered for production daily and are never long-frozen or preserved. On the back of every pack of Acana, you'll even find the direct contact details of the farmer who supplied the ingredients. Very few manufacturers anywhere in the world offer this level of transparency.

What's the difference between the Acana ranges?
Acana offers several product ranges, which differ in their meat content, protein source and whether they contain grain. The Classics range contains around 50% meat and low-glycaemic steel-cut oats – it's the brand's most affordable option. The Heritage range is completely grain-free, with a high proportion of chicken and turkey. The Regionals range delivers up to 70–75% meat from regional Canadian ingredients and is also available for cats. The Singles range is single-protein, designed for allergic and sensitive individuals.
