How to Choose a Scratching Post for Your Cat
- Height. A cat needs to be able to stretch out fully against the post — for an adult cat, allow at least 60 cm of vertical scratching surface.
- Material. Sisal lasts the longest, cardboard is the cheapest and cats love it, while plush fabric is better suited to resting than scratching. Cats that prefer to scratch horizontally will appreciate scratching mats and sacks.
- Stability. With tall multi-level models, the weight of the base is what matters most. For sturdy cats there are dedicated scratching posts for large, heavy cats, while small flats are better suited to ceiling-braced posts.
- Location. A scratching post belongs where the cat sleeps and where she has already started scratching — not in a forgotten corner.
