Types of automatic aquarium feeders
- Rotary feeders with a drum hopper – the most common type of automatic feeder. At the set time, the drum hopper rotates and releases a precise amount of food into the aquarium. They suit both flake and granulated food and come in various hopper sizes – from small models for nano tanks to large hoppers for longer absences. Good rotary feeders have an adjustable opening size for precise dosing of different food types.
- Feeders with a conveyor system – feeders using a screw or belt conveyor to dispense food precisely. They suit granulated food and pellets and offer more accurate dosing than rotary models. They're also less prone to jamming when the food gets damp.
- Feeders with a fan – automatic feeders fitted with a fan that draws moisture out of the hopper. Moisture is the main enemy of automatic feeders – it causes food to clump and jams the mechanism. Fan-equipped feeders suit aquariums in humid rooms or long-term use.
- Smart WiFi-controlled feeders – modern feeders controlled via a mobile app, letting you set feeding remotely, adjust portion sizes and frequency in real time, and track feeding history. Ideal for dedicated aquarists or setups where precise feeding control matters.
- Feeders for marine aquariums – specialised feeders designed for marine fish and invertebrates. Made from materials resistant to salt moisture, and suited to dispensing specialist marine food or thawed frozen food.
What to consider when choosing an automatic feeder
- Food type – not every feeder suits every type of food. Flake food needs a different opening setting than granules or pellets. Always check the feeder is compatible with the food you use.
- Hopper capacity – the hopper should hold enough food for your entire absence, with a margin to spare. As a rough guide, work out daily portion × number of days × a small extra buffer.
- Moisture protection – moisture from the aquarium is the biggest enemy of an automatic feeder. Look for models with a sealed hopper, ventilation or a fan, and position the feeder as far as possible from the water surface and filter outlet.
- Power source – feeders run on batteries or USB power. Battery feeders are independent of the mains and keep working during a power cut. USB models are more convenient for everyday use but stop working if the power goes out.
- Dosing accuracy – cheap feeders can dispense inconsistent portions, too little one time and too much the next. Always test the feeder for several days before you go away and check the dosing is accurate.
How to set up an automatic feeder correctly
Getting the feeder's settings right is essential for fish health and water clarity. A wrongly set feeder can cause overfeeding and poor water quality just as easily as underfeeding.
- Always adjust gradually – start with the smallest portion and increase it step by step until the fish clear the food within 2–3 minutes with nothing left on the bottom.
- Set feeding to the same times every day – fish adapt very quickly to a regular feeding schedule, and any change to their routine causes stress.
- For longer absences, set feeding to 1–2 times a day in smaller portions rather than one large one – smaller, more frequent feeds put less strain on water quality.
- Test the feeder for at least 3–5 days before you leave – check the dosing accuracy, the timer's reliability, and that the food is actually landing in the aquarium rather than beside it.
- When setting up the feeder, always watch the fish's behaviour – fish gathering at the surface and waiting for food show they're being fed enough. Fish digging in the substrate or nibbling decorations signal they aren't getting enough.
Practical tips for automatic feeders:
- Position the feeder so the food falls into the water current from the filter or pump – the water quickly spreads it across the whole surface so every fish gets its share.
- Never fill the hopper completely – food near the top is exposed to moisture and can clump together. Fill it to a maximum of two-thirds of the hopper's capacity.
- For longer absences, ask someone you trust to check in on the aquarium occasionally – an automatic feeder takes care of feeding but won't monitor temperature, water quality or other potential problems.
- Clean and dry the hopper regularly – leftover old food and moisture cause mould and spoil fresh food.
- Replace the batteries as a precaution before any longer absence – flat batteries are the most common cause of feeder failure.
- Healthy fish can easily go 1–2 weeks without food – if you're heading off for a shorter break and don't have an automatic feeder, overfeeding your fish before you leave is a bigger risk than a little hunger.
An automatic feeder is a small investment with a big payoff – for feeding consistency, water quality and your own peace of mind whenever you're away.
