FirstMate Pet Foods, a dog and cat food brand, was founded in 1989 by Michael Florian in Chilliwack (British Columbia, Canada), originally as a manufacturer of aquaculture feed. The owner used high-quality fish feed on farm dogs, who developed healthier coats and better condition after eating it — this observation was the spark that led to the creation of a dedicated dog food, giving rise to the FirstMate brand. Over time the company built its own factories (for both dry kibble and cans) to retain full control over ingredient quality and the manufacturing process.

What began as a one-off feed for farm dogs has grown into a fully-fledged super-premium food brand. Thanks to its own production infrastructure and its focus on transparency, WHOLE-grade ingredients and sustainable sourcing, FirstMate has delivered consistent product quality and safety from its beginnings right through to today.
