Types of classic dog harnesses

H-shaped harnesses – the most common type of harness, made up of two loops – one around the neck and one around the chest – joined by a central strap along the back. They're simple, lightweight and available in every size. The buckle or D-ring for attaching the lead sits on the back. Suitable for calm dogs with no tendency to pull – on dogs that do pull, they transfer the force to the chest and shoulders, which can actually encourage pulling in some dogs.
Y-shaped harnesses – anatomically shaped harnesses that respect the natural movement of a dog's shoulders. The front section is shaped like a Y and doesn't restrict the shoulder blade's movement when walking or running. They're suitable for active dogs, sporting dogs, and dogs with sensitive shoulders or recovering from orthopaedic surgery. Quality Y-harnesses are recommended by veterinary physiotherapists as the gentlest option for a dog's musculoskeletal system.
Vest harnesses – harnesses with wide fabric or mesh panels covering a larger part of the dog's chest and back. They're excellent for small and delicate breeds, where narrow straps can cause pressure points. They spread the pull of the lead over a larger area of the body. Many vest harnesses feature reflective elements or colour-coding – for example, a yellow vest for dogs that need space, or red for dogs that shouldn't be approached.
Front D-ring harnesses – harnesses that let you attach the lead at either the back or the chest. The front chest attachment acts as a natural anti-pull mechanism – when the dog pulls, it turns back towards the owner instead of pulling forward. They're useful as a transitional solution for dogs learning to walk to heel, but they're not a substitute for training.
Harnesses with a back handle – harnesses with a sturdy fabric handle on the dog's back. They let the owner quickly and safely grab the dog in a dangerous situation – for example, when crossing a road, around an aggressive dog, or when getting out of the car. They're practical for everyday walks as well as active sports.

How to choose the right harness size

The right harness size is essential for both safety and the dog's comfort. A harness that's too loose can snag on things or let the dog slip out of it, while one that's too tight causes chafing and restricts breathing and movement. Before buying, always measure your dog in the following places:

Neck circumference – measure where the collar sits, with your fingers under the tape.
Chest circumference – measure at the widest point of the chest, just behind the front legs. This is the most important measurement for choosing harness size.
Back length – for vest harnesses, measure the distance from the base of the neck to the tail.
A correctly fitted harness should allow you to slide two fingers under each strap – it must be neither too loose nor too tight.

How to fit a harness on your dog correctly

Fitting a harness correctly is just as important as choosing the right one – an incorrectly fitted harness can cause chafing, restrict movement, or be dangerously loose.

Get your dog used to the harness gradually – first let them sniff and explore it, then put it on. Reward every positive step with a treat.
Once fitted, check that no strap presses into the armpits or behind the shoulder blades – these spots are most prone to chafing during longer wear.
Regularly check the condition of the skin under the straps – especially in the armpits and behind the front legs, where friction from walking most often causes chafing.
Take the harness off for sleeping – your dog should be able to rest without it, especially during longer periods of rest or overnight.

Caring for the harness

Regularly wash or clean the harness – a dirty harness irritates the skin and can cause skin infections. Most fabric harnesses can be machine-washed on a gentle cycle.
Regularly check the condition of buckles, D-rings and seams – worn or damaged parts can fail at a critical moment, allowing the dog to escape.
Don't dry the harness in direct sunlight – UV rays speed up the degradation of the fabric fibres and plastic buckles.

Practical tips for choosing and using a classic harness:

For dogs with a deep chest and narrow waist – such as greyhounds or Dobermanns – choose a harness specifically designed for these proportions. Standard harnesses can easily slip off their body.
For puppies, buy an adjustable harness with plenty of room to grow – puppies grow fast, and a fixed-size harness with no adjustment will soon be too small.
If your dog actively resists the harness or tries to escape it, check whether it's causing pain – a harness should be comfortable, and your dog should tolerate it without resistance.
For evening and night walks, choose a harness with reflective elements or a slot for an LED light – safety in low visibility is just as important as a correct fit.
Never attach the lead to both the harness and the collar at the same time without a special coupler – uneven pull on two points can cause discomfort or injury.
