Food for rabbits
Hay is an essential part of a rabbit's diet. It helps keep their digestive tract in good condition and wears down their teeth. It can be supplemented with feed mixes, ideally high in fibre and grain-free. The right composition and portion sizes help prevent obesity.
Food for ferrets
Ferrets used to be fed cat kibble. Nowadays, food designed specifically for ferrets is available, which naturally makes for a better choice and suits their needs more closely. The basis should be primarily meat, while the food should contain as few grains as possible.
Food for guinea pigs
Guinea pigs are herbivores, and like rabbits, hay forms the basis of their diet. You can supplement it with grass, herbs and pelleted food. Good ingredients include dried vegetables, a high fibre content and vitamin C, which guinea pigs cannot produce on their own.
Food for hamsters and gerbils
Hamsters aren't particularly fussy, so feeding them is straightforward. Choose one of the feed mixes based mainly on grains and seeds. You can occasionally treat them to fruit and vegetables, or mealworms.
Food for chinchillas
Hay is the staple food for chinchillas. You can enrich it with special chinchilla feed, which should consist mainly of alfalfa pellets and other suitable plants, along with vegetables and fruit. Avoid nuts and seeds.
Food for rats
Rats are omnivores and appreciate a varied diet. Grains form the basis of rat food, but you can occasionally add meat or fruit and vegetables too.
