Aquarium pumps keep the water in your tank moving and circulating – and water movement is one of the most important factors in a healthy, stable aquatic environment. Still water with no circulation creates dead zones with low oxygen, a build-up of waste and uneven parameters, all of which are harmful to fish and plants alike. Aquarium pumps differ from both filters and air pumps – their primary job isn't filtration or oxygenation but creating natural water flow. They're essential in marine aquariums, where corals and marine organisms need strong, varied currents, but they also benefit freshwater tanks by improving the distribution of nutrients, oxygen and heat throughout the whole volume.
Types of aquarium pumps
- Powerheads – the most common type of aquarium pump. A compact electric pump attached to the aquarium glass with suction cups, creating a current in the direction you need. Available across a wide flow-rate range, from small models for nano tanks to powerful units for large marine setups. Modern powerheads have an adjustable flow direction and smooth output control.
- Wave pumps – specialised pumps that simulate the natural surge and varying currents of a coral reef. They run in a pulsing mode, alternating strong and gentle flow to mimic waves and tides. They're the standard for marine reef tanks, where varying flow stops detritus settling on coral surfaces and supports coral health.
- Circulation pumps – powerful pumps that provide overall water circulation in the aquarium or sump. Suited to large tanks where the filter alone can't keep the whole volume moving. For marine aquariums, a circulation pump's flow rate should be roughly 10–20 times the tank volume per hour.
- Sump return pumps – powerful pumps that return water from the sump back to the main aquarium. They need to reliably overcome the height difference between sump and display tank while keeping a stable flow. If one fails it can cause overflow or an empty sump – always choose a model with some power in reserve.
- Solar and battery pumps – pumps powered by solar energy or batteries, suited to garden ponds or as a backup source of water movement during a power cut.
How to size a pump correctly
Correct pump sizing depends on the type of aquarium, the fish species you keep and how much flow they need:
- Freshwater tanks with calm-water species – bettas, discus and angelfish prefer still water with minimal flow. A circulation rate of 5–10 times the tank volume per hour, provided mainly by the filter, is enough for these tanks. A strong pump would stress these species.
- Freshwater tanks with current-loving species – tetras, danios or African cichlids from the great lakes prefer stronger flow. A circulation rate of 10–20 times the volume per hour, combining filter and powerhead, suits these tanks.
- Marine fish-only tanks – need stronger flow that mimics water movement on a coral reef. A circulation rate of 20–40 times the volume per hour is the usual standard.
- Marine reef tanks (with corals) – the most demanding category, needing intense, varied flow. Soft corals and LPS corals prefer moderate flow, while SPS corals need very strong flow. Programmable wave pumps are a must for reef tanks.
Positioning the pump in the aquarium
Where you position the pump matters as much as its output – a poorly placed pump creates dead zones and never reaches its full potential:
- Position the pump so the current passes through the whole volume of the aquarium with no dead zones. The flow should circulate right around the tank – from the pump along one side, across, and back.
- In longer aquariums, use two pumps on opposite sides facing each other – this creates natural turbulent flow that mimics a river current.
- Never aim the pump directly at delicate plants or attached corals – strong direct flow can mechanically damage soft tissue.
- In marine tanks, position the pump behind and below decorations so the flow appears to come from natural spots, simulating currents on a reef.
Maintaining aquarium pumps
Regular maintenance keeps a pump running reliably for years:
- Clean the pump every 4–8 weeks – algae, limescale and detritus reduce flow and overload the motor.
- Clean the impeller with a soft brush or a cotton bud – scratches on the impeller cause vibration and noise.
- Remove limescale with a vinegar or citric acid solution – scraping deposits off mechanically damages the pump's surface.
- Check the rubber suction cups regularly – ageing cups lose their grip, and the pump can fall onto the substrate or decorations.
Practical tips for aquarium pumps:
- Never run the pump out of water – running dry damages the impeller and bearings within seconds.
- For marine aquariums, choose pumps certified for use in saltwater – the chlorides in seawater quickly corrode parts on pumps that aren't designed for it.
- When buying a pump for a sump, always allow for head loss due to the height difference – every metre of height reduces the pump's flow rate by roughly 10–15%.
- Increase output gradually when introducing a new pump to an established aquarium – sudden strong flow stresses fish used to calmer water.
- Always keep a spare impeller on hand for your pump – it's the part that wears out most often, and replacing it is a quick, cheap alternative to buying a new pump.
