While the constantly growing incisors and molars need a coarse, fibrous structure for proper wear, finer particles are important for the caecum, which acts as a fermentation chamber. A specific fibre length is also needed for healthy digestion.

The shape of the pellets is tailored to the specific type of animal the food is intended for – while rabbits chew in a figure-of-eight motion, guinea pigs, degus and chinchillas move their jaw backwards and forwards.
