What to look for when choosing a dog bed?
You've probably already guessed that design shouldn't be the main factor when choosing a dog bed, although it's certainly worth considering too. First, though, try to find the option that suits your dog best. What should you take into account?
1.) Size
While your dog is resting in their usual position, measure them from nose to tail and add at least 10 cm to the result - that gives you the optimal bed size. At the same time, don't buy a bed that's unnecessarily large. Your dog should be able to settle in comfortably, without feeling lost in it.
2.) Type and shape
Oval and round beds are a popular choice for small and medium-sized breeds that like to curl up into a ball. Rectangular beds suit larger dogs better, since they need to stretch their legs out while sleeping - for them, you can also choose blankets or cushions without raised sides. Small and nervous dogs in particular may appreciate a bed shaped like a den or cave, where they'll feel safe and secure. For older dogs or pets with joint problems, choose a bed with an orthopaedic mattress.
3.) Placement
Before you rush into buying, decide where you'll put the bed. If it'll be outdoors or in a garage, choose more durable materials, a thick base and raised sides to protect against cold and wind, or opt for a fully enclosed bed instead. For indoor placement, you're pretty much free to choose whatever you like.
4.) Material
When choosing the material, practicality should be your main concern. This is especially true for outdoor beds or dogs that spend a lot of time in the garden and get dirty on a daily basis - here, easy-to-wipe and machine-washable beds are a real bonus, with nylon being a good material choice. For smaller dogs living mainly indoors, on the other hand, you can go for plush or a classic fabric option instead.
