Diluting the urine reduces the concentration of struvite and calcium oxalate in the urine. A larger volume of urine also ensures the bladder is flushed out regularly.

Urinary crystals cannot grow in unsaturated urine. Such an environment therefore prevents the formation of struvite and calcium oxalate crystals.

The amount of glycosaminoglycans (GAG), which are normally present on the healthy bladder lining, decreases in idiopathic cystitis. This reduction, which results in increased permeability of the bladder to bacteria, toxins and ions, causes inflammation of the bladder and stimulates sensitive pain receptors.
