Sand and Gravel
Aquarium sand and gravel form an important part of the substrate, affecting not only the look of the tank but also fish health and plant growth. Sand is ideal for delicate fish species with sensitive barbels (such as corydoras), while gravel suits aquariums with larger species and stronger water circulation. Both types of substrate aid biological filtration, provide shelter for beneficial bacteria and allow plant roots access to nutrients. When choosing, it's important to consider grain size, pH neutrality and the needs of your aquarium's particular inhabitants. Some gravels and sands are also decorative, helping to create a natural-looking aquarium.
