Cichlids from Lake Malawi are a very popular species among cichlids in general. Although they are not strikingly colourful, they are easily distinguished from other fish by their interesting behaviour. Most of the Lake Malawi cichlids that aquarists choose for their aquariums belong to the Malawi mbuna group. The name means „living in the stones“ and describes their life in small, vigorously defended places such as the crevices and cracks of the rocky parts of Lake Malawi. These fish stray only minimally from the places where they reside, so they feed mainly on algae and micro-organisms from the surrounding rocks. Because of these specific living conditions, their entire digestive tract is adapted to a special form of feeding, which often causes these fish to react very sensitively to unsuitably chosen food. As mouthbrooders, the females carry the eggs and the young in their mouths. During this time the females do not eat, and they therefore subsequently have an increased need for high-quality food.
Tetra Malawi flakes, compared with other products on the market, are a scientifically perfected food containing 40% of a balanced blend of 3 valuable algae - 20% Spirulina, 17% nori algae and 3% Chlorella. In addition, the food contains a balanced blend of other plant and animal ingredients, as well as vitamins, minerals and valuable fibre. The development of Tetra food by the Research and Development Department, together with extensive tests on cichlids, guarantees that Tetra Malawi food provides the fish with all the nutrients they need for health, intense colouring and vitality. The food is also suitable for other herbivorous ornamental tropical fish.
Feeding guide: feed several times a day in small amounts.
