Hailea HL-BT filters are fitted with a spray bar attachment that regulates the flow through the filter and oxygenates the water by disturbing the surface of the aquarium.

- biological - colonies of beneficial bacteria convert organic nitrogen-containing compounds into nitrites and subsequently into nitrates
- chemical - activated carbon
