Aquarium Water Treatment Chemistry
Water treatment chemistry is an essential part of every aquarist’s kit – without the right products, you can’t safely change the water, set up a new aquarium, or fix problems with water parameters. Tap water contains chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals, and may have unsuitable pH or hardness – adding untreated tap water straight into the aquarium can damage fish gills or wipe out the biological filter within minutes. The right water treatment products are the first line of defence for your fish’s health.

Modern aquarium water treatment products are the result of decades of research and development – they cover the whole spectrum of needs, from basic chlorine neutralisation through precise pH and hardness adjustment to specialist products for marine aquariums or biotope set-ups. The right choice of products depends on the composition of your tap water, the fish species you keep and the type of aquarium.
Types of aquarium water treatment products
Conditioners and chlorine neutralisers
The most important group of products – essential for every water change. They neutralise chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals found in tap water, keeping the new water safe for fish and the biological filter alike. Modern conditioners also contain substances that support the formation of a protective slime coat on the fish’s skin, guarding against mechanical injury and infection. They’re available in concentrated forms where just a few drops treat dozens of litres of water.
pH adjusting products
pH is one of the most important aquarium water parameters, and different fish species need different values:
- pH-lowering products – acidic products or peat extracts that lower pH for species that prefer soft, acidic water, such as discus, tetras or South American cichlids. Natural alternatives such as peat or driftwood are gentler and give a more stable pH reduction without sudden swings.
- pH-raising products – alkaline products for species that prefer harder, more alkaline water, such as African cichlids from Lake Malawi or Lake Tanganyika, which favour a pH of 7.5–9.0.
- pH stabilisers and buffers – products that keep pH stable at a specific value and prevent dangerous swings. KH (carbonate hardness) is a natural buffer – keeping it above 3°dH prevents critical pH swings.
Water hardness adjusting products
- Water softeners – products or resins that lower the overall hardness and carbonate hardness of the water. Ideal for keeping sensitive species that need soft water. An alternative is blending tap water with reverse-osmosis or distilled water.
- Hardness-increasing products – mineral salts that raise GH and KH for species that prefer harder water, or for remineralising reverse-osmosis water that’s too soft for most fish.
- RO water remineralisers – special mineral products that restore the optimal mineral make-up of pure reverse-osmosis water. Essential for set-ups requiring precise control of parameters, such as discus tanks or biotope aquariums.
Products for cycling and supporting the biological filter
- Bacterial starters – products containing live or freeze-dried cultures of nitrifying bacteria that speed up the cycling of a new aquarium’s biological filter. A good bacterial starter can cut cycling time from 3–6 weeks to just 1–2 weeks. Also useful after antibiotic treatment, which disrupts the biological filter.
- Products supporting biological filtration – enzymatic products that aid the breakdown of organic waste and support the biological filter’s function. Useful for densely stocked aquariums or after a disturbance to the biological balance.
Products for marine aquariums
- Marine salt – special aquarium salt with a precise mix of minerals and trace elements matching natural seawater. Never use ordinary table salt – it lacks the necessary minerals and may contain additives harmful to marine life.
- Calcium and alkalinity supplements – corals need calcium and alkalinity to build their skeletons. Regularly topping up these elements is essential in every reef aquarium. Available as two-part systems, kalkwasser, or via a calcium reactor.
- Trace element supplements – marine organisms use up dozens of trace elements that regular water changes only partially replace. Specialist products maintain the optimal concentration of iodine, strontium, fluorine and other elements.
Speciality water treatment products
- Blackwater biotope products – peat extracts and humic acids that mimic the natural environment of South American or Asian blackwater biotopes. They lower pH, soften the water and release natural antibacterial substances that benefit sensitive species.
- Treatment bath products – concentrated saline or medicinal solutions for short-term treatment baths for sick fish outside the main aquarium.
- Nitrate-reducing products – biological or chemical products that speed up nitrate breakdown in aquariums where regular water changes alone aren’t enough to keep levels safe.
How to use water treatment products correctly
- Always add conditioner to the new water before adding it to the aquarium – never directly to an aquarium containing fish, where a concentrated product could cause local irritation.
- Add pH-adjusting products slowly and gradually – a sudden pH change of more than 0.5 per hour causes pH shock, which is just as dangerous as unsuitable pH itself.
- Never mix different products together before applying them – chemical reactions between products can cause precipitation or neutralise the active ingredients.
- Always test the water parameters before and after applying products – without testing, you won’t know whether a product is working or how much to use.
- Store products somewhere dry, away from direct sunlight and frost – improper storage shortens shelf life and reduces effectiveness.
Practical tips for water treatment chemistry:
- Find out the composition of your tap water from your local water supplier – knowing the baseline pH, GH, KH and chlorine levels makes choosing the right products much easier.
- Always keep a good supply of conditioner on hand – running out right in the middle of a water change is an unnecessary risk for your fish.
- For demanding species such as discus or fish from blackwater biotopes, consider investing in a reverse-osmosis filter – controlling water parameters precisely is far easier with RO water than by adjusting hard tap water.
- When setting up a new aquarium, use a bacterial starter together with a small amount of substrate or filter media from an established, healthy aquarium – combining live bacteria from an existing tank with a starter significantly speeds up cycling.
- After treating fish with chemical products, always carry out several water changes and add activated carbon to the filter to remove any medication residue from the water.
