The right diet is the foundation of health, vitality and beautiful colouration in aquarium fish. Food isn't just a source of energy – it's a direct driver of immunity, reproduction, colouration and lifespan in your fish. As with any other pet, in the aquarium hobby too, the quality of the food is directly reflected in the quality of life of the fish that eat it. Overfeeding, meanwhile, is one of the most common mistakes made by aquarists and the leading cause of poor water quality and the health problems that follow.

Choosing the right food depends on the species of fish, its size, feeding behaviour and individual nutritional needs. Fish differ in where in the water column they feed – surface feeders hunt near the surface, mid-water feeders in open water, and bottom feeders pick food up from the substrate. The right type of food ensures every fish gets its share without unnecessary waste or fouling the water.

Types of aquarium fish food

• Flake food – the most widespread form of food, suitable for most tropical fish that feed at the surface or in the middle of the water column. Flakes sink slowly, giving fish plenty of time to feed. They come in various sizes and formulations – for omnivorous, carnivorous or herbivorous species. The downside of flakes is that they soak up water quickly and break down, which pollutes the water if overfed.
• Pellet food – compact pellets that break down more slowly than flakes. Available as floating, slow-sinking or sinking – for fish at different levels of the water column. Pellets are more nutritionally concentrated than flakes and reduce the risk of water pollution from leftover food. Ideal for medium and larger fish.
• Tablets and wafers – food designed primarily for bottom-dwelling fish – catfish, loaches and other species that pick food up from the substrate. Tablets stick to the aquarium glass or sink to the bottom and slowly dissolve. Excellent for night-time feeding, when bottom-dwelling species are most active.
• Sticks and pellets – larger food for medium and large fish. Nutritionally balanced and slow-dissolving. Suitable for cichlids, larger cyprinids or arowanas.
• Freeze-dried food – freeze-dried live organisms – brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia or tubifex – retaining the nutritional value of live food without the risk of transmitting disease or parasites. An excellent addition to the basic diet for boosting dietary variety and stimulating fish's natural hunting instincts.
• Frozen food – frozen live organisms such as brine shrimp, red and black bloodworms, daphnia or krill. They retain the natural structure and nutritional value of live food and are highly appealing to fish. Thaw before feeding in a small amount of aquarium water – never feed while still frozen.
• Live food – brine shrimp, daphnia, tubifex or earthworms are the most natural form of food for fish, stimulating natural hunting behaviour. Excellent for conditioning fish before spawning or for feeding fussy species that refuse dry food. The downside is the risk of introducing disease and parasites – always source live food from trusted suppliers.
• Plant-based food and spirulina – food with a high content of plant matter, algae or spirulina for herbivorous and omnivorous species such as livebearers, tetras, ancistrus or certain cichlids. Spirulina naturally enhances fish colouration and supports their immune system.
• Specialist food for marine fish – nutritionally balanced food specially formulated for the needs of marine fish and invertebrates. Contains marine proteins, astaxanthin to enhance colouration, and specific vitamins that support the health of marine species.

How to feed aquarium fish correctly

Correct feeding technique is just as important as choosing the right food. Feeding mistakes are the most common cause of declining water quality and fish health problems.

• Quantity – feed only as much as the fish will eat within 2–3 minutes. Anything left on the bottom or in the water after that time is surplus and pollutes the water.
• Frequency – feed adult fish 1–2 times a day. Fry and young growing fish need feeding 3–4 times a day in smaller portions. Healthy adult fish can go without food for 1–2 weeks without any trouble if you're away on holiday.
• Variety – no single food covers all of a fish's nutritional needs on its own. Rotate different types of food – supplement flakes or pellets as your staple with frozen or freeze-dried food 2–3 times a week.
• Fasting once a week – one day a week without feeding naturally cleanses the fish's digestive tract and reduces the build-up of biological waste in the tank. Experienced aquarists use this technique regularly.
• Automatic feeders – during longer absences, they ensure regular feeding without having to ask neighbours for help. Modern automatic feeders are reliable and adjustable for different portion sizes and frequencies.

Nutritional needs of different fish species

Different fish species have markedly different nutritional needs – and feeding the wrong food leads to nutritional deficiencies, faded colours or health problems:

• Carnivorous species (cichlids, piranhas, arowanas) – need food with a high content of animal protein. The staple is frozen or freeze-dried food supplemented with special pellets for carnivores.
• Herbivorous species (ancistrus, some cichlids, turtles) – need a high proportion of plant matter. The staple is spirulina or vegetable-based tablets supplemented with fresh vegetables – cucumber, courgette or spinach clipped to the aquarium glass.
• Omnivorous species (tetras, livebearers, danios) – the least demanding group, accepting most commercial foods. A balanced diet combining flakes or pellets with the occasional live or frozen food is the ideal solution.
• Bottom-dwelling species (catfish, loaches, armoured catfish) – need food that sinks to the bottom – tablets, pellets or frozen food given in the evening or at night, when they are most active.

Practical tips for feeding aquarium fish:

• Store food in a dry, dark and cool place – moisture and light speed up vitamin degradation and fat oxidation. Use opened food within 3 months.
• Never refreeze frozen food once thawed – food that has been thawed and refrozen loses its nutritional value and can cause digestive problems.
• When introducing a new food, add it gradually alongside the existing diet – a sudden change of food can cause digestive upset or food refusal.
• If fish refuse food they previously accepted, it may be a sign of illness or declining water quality – check the water parameters and the fish's behaviour.
• Don't feed fish food intended for other animals – dog or cat kibble has an unsuitable composition and can cause health problems or seriously degrade water quality.
