Bedding and Substrates
Terrarium bedding and substrates are basic equipment for every terrarium and play a key role in maintaining the right microclimate, hygiene and comfort for the animals kept in it. The choice depends on the species – sandy substrates are ideal for desert species, while moist coconut fibre, peat or moss mixes suit tropical reptiles. A sand-and-soil mix is often used for land tortoises, while beech chips or newspaper tend to suit snakes and geckos. The substrate should absorb moisture well, eliminate odours and be easy to maintain. A well-chosen substrate supports the animal's natural behaviour, such as digging or burrowing, and contributes to a healthy environment in the terrarium.
