The second cut, or aftermath hay, follows the first cut. It contains a lower percentage of fibre, but stands out for its higher protein content and greener colour. These properties result from a higher proportion of grass leaves and a smaller share of flowers and seed heads. The stems are soft, short and easily digestible, which is why aftermath hay is suitable for rabbits as well as guinea pigs, chinchillas, degus and other small mammals. It is also welcomed by young animals, pregnant and nursing females, older animals, and animals with any difficulties eating, whether related to dental disease or recovery after illness or a veterinary procedure. To ensure the hay wears the teeth down sufficiently, it is recommended to mix aftermath hay with first-cut hay.
The hay comes from clean, organically managed meadows with BIO certification, cared for as the greatest of treasures. The meadows are not chemically treated, but are regularly mulched (weeds are eco-friendly removed from them by mowing with a specially shaped blade) and oversown. Thanks to this, the hay has a balanced ratio of herbs and grasses and contains clover, plantain, fescue, timothy grass, dandelion and chamomile. After harvesting, the hay is packed by hand – every stem passes through human hands, so no twigs or other unwanted debris remain in the hay. It is also dust-free.
