First cut (the first hay cut) refers to hay mown most often during June, when the grasses are in flower. Due to its high content of flowers and ears, it has the highest fibre content. It also contains more hard, long stalks, which help small herbivores wear down their teeth. First-cut hay plays an essential role especially in the diet of rabbits, who will welcome the long stalks and make easy work of them. It is also suitable for guinea pigs, degus, chinchillas and other small mammals. For an even better taste experience, the hay is enriched with herb flowers: marigold, cornflower, lavender and rose.
The hay comes from clean, organically farmed meadows with BIO certification, which are cared for like the greatest treasure. The meadows are not chemically treated; instead, they are regularly mulched (weeds are ecologically removed by cutting with a specially shaped blade) and oversown. As a result, the hay has a balanced ratio of herbs and grasses and contains clover, plantain, fescue, timothy, dandelion and chamomile. After harvesting, the hay is packed by hand – every single stalk passes through human hands, so no twigs or other unwanted debris remain in the hay. It is also dust-free.
