Suet Balls
Suet balls are the simplest way to support tits, sparrows or woodpeckers through the winter — the fat gives them the energy they need most during frosty spells. Alongside classic balls, you'll also find suet blocks, pellets, discs and logs, including large packs of 30 and 50 pieces to see you through the whole season.

What to look out for
- Net-free balls are safer. Birds can get their feet and tongues caught in plastic netting. Serve net-free versions in a bird feeder or wire cage instead.
- Composition. Seed balls are universal, insect and mealworm versions are a favourite with tits, while peanut and sunflower varieties are appreciated by woodpeckers and nuthatches.
- Placement. Hang the feeder somewhere cats can't reach and where birds have a clear view — ideally a short distance from a bush they can fly into.
- Cleanliness. Remove leftovers and damp balls regularly — disease spreads easily from a dirty feeder.
- Stick with it. Once you start feeding, keep it up until the end of winter. Birds get used to a food source and come to rely on it.
The range is complemented by seed and other food for outdoor birds as well as nesting boxes.
