Joints and Mobility in Cats
Problems with the musculoskeletal system are among the most commonly overlooked health issues in cats. Unlike dogs, cats hide pain extremely well – instead of limping or whimpering, their discomfort shows up subtly: they stop jumping onto favourite spots, play less, struggle to reach awkward parts of their body when grooming, or withdraw from company. It's estimated that osteoarthritis affects as many as 90% of cats over 12 years old – yet most owners have no idea.

Joint and mobility supplements for cats aren't just for seniors. Preventive joint support is worth starting from middle age, roughly 6–7 years old, when the first invisible changes begin in the cartilage and joint fluid. The earlier you start, the slower any future problems tend to progress.
Key active ingredients in joint and mobility supplements for cats:
- Glucosamine – a natural component of cartilage that becomes depleted with age. Glucosamine supplementation supports cartilage tissue repair and slows its wear. The effect shows after at least 4–6 weeks of regular use.
- Chondroitin – works synergistically with glucosamine, helping cartilage retain water and stay flexible and resistant to mechanical stress. Most quality joint supplements combine the two.
- MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) – a natural source of sulphur essential for producing collagen and connective tissue. It has anti-inflammatory properties and naturally eases joint pain.
- Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) – powerful natural anti-inflammatories that reduce joint swelling and soreness. Fish oil is one of the most effective natural supplements for cats with arthritic problems.
- Type II collagen – the basic building block of joint cartilage. Hydrolysed collagen in supplement form is easily absorbed and supports the natural repair of joint tissue.
- Hyaluronic acid – a natural component of joint fluid that lubricates the joint and cushions impact. Its production declines with age, so supplementation helps keep joint fluid in optimal condition.
- Boswellia (frankincense) – a natural plant extract with proven anti-inflammatory effects, used in mobility supplements for cats as an alternative to synthetic ingredients.
When choosing a supplement, consider the form of the product. Cats are notoriously fussy and often refuse tablets or capsules. Products in the form of pastes, drops or powders mixed into food tend to be best accepted. Some supplements are also available as chewable treats with an appealing flavour.
It's also important to work out whether you're looking for preventive support for a healthy middle-aged cat, or active help for a cat already showing symptoms. For prevention, milder products containing glucosamine and omega-3 are usually enough. For cats with more advanced problems, comprehensive products combining several active ingredients are more suitable – and it's always worth discussing the choice with a vet.
Practical tips for giving joint supplements to cats:
- Expect to see the first results only after 4–8 weeks of regular use – joint supplements don't work instantly like painkillers, but gradually rebuild tissue.
- If your cat refuses the paste or powder, try mixing it into strongly scented wet food – tuna or salmon usually masks any unpleasant taste of the product.
- Make sure your cat has easy access to favourite spots – if they struggle to jump onto the sofa or bed, add steps or a ramp. Reducing strain on the joints complements the effect of supplementation.
- Watch for changes in behaviour – improved mobility, renewed interest in play, or a return to jumping are the best indicators that a supplement is working.
- If your cat's condition doesn't improve or gets worse, see a vet – osteoarthritis and other orthopaedic problems may need veterinary treatment that supplements cannot replace.
- For cats with kidney disease, consult a vet before starting any joint supplement – some products can put extra strain on the kidneys.
A mobile cat is a happy cat. Mobility supplements are a simple, natural way to help your cat stay active, playful and comfortable – whether as prevention or as everyday support through a more challenging stage of life.
