First Aid for Cats
Accidents happen even to cats who live entirely indoors. A scratch from another cat, a piece of broken glass underfoot, a paw injured while jumping, or a small wound after surgery – these are all situations where you need to act quickly and correctly. Keeping basic first aid supplies for cats at home can significantly shorten healing time and stop a minor injury turning into an infection.

First aid products aren't a substitute for veterinary care – they're its essential first step. A wound that's properly treated before your vet visit means less pain for the cat, lower risk of infection, and a faster start to treatment. Every household with a cat should always have a basic first aid kit close at hand.
What belongs in a cat's home first aid kit
Disinfectants are an absolute essential. Products based on chlorhexidine or an iodine solution, at the appropriate dilution, are suitable for cats. Chlorhexidine is gentler on skin tissue and doesn't slow healing the way hydrogen peroxide does, which isn't recommended for cats. Never use products containing tea tree oil, salicylic acid or alcohol on cats – these are toxic to them or cause severe irritation.
Styptic (haemostatic) products stop bleeding from small wounds, grazes or injured claws. They come as powders, sprays or sticks. They're especially useful for claw injuries – accidentally trimming a claw too short is one of the most common household injuries in cats and can bleed surprisingly heavily.
Healing and protective sprays form a protective layer over the wound that keeps bacteria out, maintains an optimal healing environment, and puts the cat off licking the treated area thanks to a bitter taste. They're more practical than dressings in places where a bandage is hard to keep in place – on paws or ears, for example.
Eye and ear rinses are used to flush out dirt, foreign bodies or discharge straight away. Sterile saline solution is a safe choice for rinsing eyes in cases of inflammation or irritation – always use it to clean the area first, before applying any drops or ointments.
Paw care products help with cracked, injured or irritated paw pads. Specialist balms and creams speed up the healing of minor injuries and protect the paws from further irritation.
When to call the vet immediately
Home first aid has its limits. Contact your vet immediately if:
- The wound is bleeding heavily and the bleeding won't stop within 5–10 minutes of direct pressure.
- The wound is deep, extensive, or caused by a bite from another animal – bite wounds are especially prone to infection because of the bacteria in an animal's mouth.
- The cat is limping, refusing to put weight on a paw, or showing signs of severe pain.
- The area around the wound is swollen, warm to the touch, or smells bad – these are signs of infection that need antibiotic treatment.
- The cat has swallowed a foreign object, a chemical, or a plant – in this case, don't induce vomiting without your vet's instructions.
- The cat is lethargic, not breathing properly, or has pale gums – these are signs of shock that need immediate help.
Practical tips for treating a cat at home:
- Before treating your cat, wrap them securely in a towel or blanket – even a calm cat may bite or scratch when in pain. Wrapping also helps calm them and makes treatment easier.
- Always treat wounds wearing gloves – this protects both you and the cat from spreading bacteria.
- Apply products carefully and without rushing – stress increases pain and makes the cat less cooperative. Speak to her calmly and move slowly.
- After treatment, monitor the cat for at least 24–48 hours – worsening symptoms, a fever, or a change in behaviour are all signs you should see a vet.
- Regularly check and restock your first aid kit – expired products can be ineffective or even harmful.
A properly stocked first aid kit and a calm approach to first aid are the best things you can do for your cat in a difficult moment – until you can get to the vet.
