Alavis SAMMY for Dogs and Cats 30 caps
ALAVIS™ SAMMY is a veterinary product for dogs and cats containing a combination of L-choline, L-methionine and Silybin - an extract of milk thistle. All these substances are known for their positive effect on the liver and its regeneration. The liver is the main and most important organ for the metabolism and detoxification of the body. The liver carries out the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and amino acids, the detoxification of ammonia and the degradation of cholesterol and haem; hormones are also formed, degraded and inactivated in the liver, plasma proteins are produced there, and an equally important function is the storage of energy (lipids and glycogen), iron and vitamins.
ALAVIS™ SAMMY can also be used for so-called cognitive function disorders in dogs and cats.
Among cognitive functions (recognition functions) are processes such as learning, memory or decision-making. The centres for these processes are located in various parts of the brain.
Cognitive function disorders in dogs and cats most often manifest as:
- impaired recognition – not recognising family members
- disorientation – getting lost in familiar surroundings; aimless wandering; bumping into obstacles
- deterioration of hygiene habits – urinating at home
- changes in the sleep cycle – night-time wakefulness, often associated with restlessness, vocalisation and signs of disorientation
These changes may result in so-called geriatric (senile) dementia. By dementia we mean a state in which the impairment of cognitive (recognition) functions is more serious than corresponds to age and state of health.
We recommend ALAVIS™ SAMMY:
- for the regeneration of the liver in dogs and cats
- for geriatric and chronically ill dogs and cats
- for patients with signs of dementia
- in cases of impaired liver function (elevated liver enzymes, inflammation of the liver and bile ducts, tumorous changes of the liver; poisoning, etc.)
Composition:
SAM-e (S-adenosyl methionine) – 200 mg
Silybin (extract of milk thistle) – 24 mg
The active substance SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine) occurs naturally in the bodies of animals. It is formed in the liver from the amino acid methionine, which both dogs and cats obtain from food. However, in cases of inadequate nutrition, liver disease or in old and chronically ill animals, its supply may not be sufficient.
S-adenosylmethionine participates in a whole range of chemical reactions in the body, primarily through its conversion into glutathione, which acts as an important antioxidant (protecting cells against oxidative stress and free oxygen radicals) and thus also helps, for example, with wound healing.
SAM-e contains sulphur and methyl groups. Thanks to this, it participates in the synthesis of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemical substances formed in the nervous system that serve to transmit information between nerve cells or between nerve and muscle cells.
That is why SAM-e can be used for so-called cognitive function disorders in dogs and cats.
Silybin from milk thistle has for many years been known and used for its hepatoprotective effect, i.e. it protects liver cells (hepatocytes). It prevents the breakdown of hepatocytes and aids the regeneration of the damaged cell membrane.
The simultaneous use of SAM-e and Silybin has a marked positive effect on liver regeneration. Recently, the importance of SAM-e has also been recognised in cognitive disorders (dementia) of geriatric dogs and cats. As these animals age, we encounter the development of dementia in them, and with the help of SAM-e it is possible to alleviate these changes.
Excipients: magnesium stearate, modified starch and gelatine

Method of use: The capsules are given daily according to the recommended dosage into the animal's mouth or with a small piece of food. The capsule can be opened and its contents mixed with water or with a small piece of food.
Give the product at least 60 minutes before feeding.
Duration of administration: In acute liver inflammation or pancreatitis, give ALAVIS™ SAMMY daily for 1–3 months; in chronic liver problems, give the product daily for 2–3 months; and in high-risk patients or patients with significant liver damage, give the product 2× a week over the long term following a 1–3 month daily course.
