Cystitis is described as inflammation of the bladder and can have many causes, such as bacteria, stress, urinary stones or problems in the protective lining of the bladder (Glycosaminoglycans - GAG), or even neoplasia or polyps.
The most common causes of this condition depend on the species, sex and also age. Compared with dogs or humans, cystitis occurs more frequently in cats before 10 years of age (this applies to both female and male cats, in whom it is an urgent situation, since it can lead to blockage of the urethra - obstruction). Short-haired breeds and Persian cats are more susceptible to cystitis. Cats with this condition most often live in a household with several cats without access to the outdoors, and their diet consists of dry food, and they are usually overweight.
In young cats, plugs and idiopathic cystitis (stress) are the cause of this condition in 75% of cases, urinary stones are responsible for 20% of cases, and only 5% of cases are of bacterial origin. This contrasts with the pathology in older dogs and cats, where most cases are caused by bacteria.
Cystitis is often idiopathic
Treatment of cystitis depends on its cause: in the case of urolithiasis, removal and/or dissolution of the urinary stones will be needed; in the case of a bacterial infection, choosing the right antibiotics is key. In an idiopathic situation, multimodal environmental modification (MEMO) is needed.
Treatment should always be multimodal
Since cystitis in cats is very strongly associated with stress, its treatment should always be multimodal:
- Adjusting and improving the environment in which the cat lives, thereby reducing the animal's stress levels
- Reducing urine concentration by increasing water intake
- Controlling pain/inflammation and strengthening the bladder lining, which is often damaged.
L-TRYPTOPHAN
As a precursor of serotonin, it helps control behaviour associated with stress and reduces the animal's level of anxiety.
VITAMINS B1, B3 AND B6
These vitamins are essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system. They help increase the amount and availability of key neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, GABA and dopamine.
HYALURONIC ACID
The main component of the protective GAG layer that covers the bladder.
L-THEANINE
Increases the level of the GABA neurotransmitter and the level of serotonin, which is important for reducing fear and anxiety. It helps lower noradrenaline levels.
OMEGA 3 (EPA and DHA)
When used during inflammation and degenerative and oncological pathology, Omega-3 fatty acids support the synthesis of anti-inflammatory eicosanoids such as PG-3 prostaglandin and LT-5, while reducing the leukotriene synthesis of other highly inflammatory eicosanoids.
N-ACETYLGLUCOSAMINE
A precursor molecule strongly linked to the production of GAG in the bladder's internal lining. The integrity of this layer guarantees epithelial protection against irritants in the urine, toxins and bacteria.
